Representation of Women

Over the years there has been a strict distinction of the portrayal of women in a media context in the comparison of men. Women have a tendency to be sexualized in media productions and enhance the theory of the 'male gaze'. This theory represents that women are seen in a sexual nature and for nothing more. There have been many media products which have scrutinized women and have been guilty of these acts. For example:

Television

- Most heros and protagonists in television predominately tend to be of a male figure rather than female characters who are generally the 'sidekick' character.

- For television shows such as sports, there is a large amount of cable or networking time showing male sports and female sports seem to have a lot less air time than male sports, supporting the idea that female sports are less interesting or will lack viewing due to the sexuality of the participants.

Video Games

- Studies have supported that women in video games are highly sexualized and scantily clad.

- Some video games such as the likes of Grand Theft Auto support physical abuse against women and portray women as prostitutes.

Film Industry

- The number of leading roles for women is way lower than the amount of leading roles for men.

- The body doubles for women portray unrealistic expectations for men and women and support the fact that every women should have the idealized body.
